Do you own a HackRF Portapack? Would you like to use it for a bit of ghetto-rigged TSCM? While a small SDR like this is nowhere near as effective as an expensive Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscope, it gives a lot of bang for buck in terms of what we can do. I have a custom Freqman file for use in the scanner/recon app in the HackRF portapack that you can download here. Antennas

This antenna is a periodic log with a pretty wide spread (100 Mhz-12 Ghz). At its center, it has a gain of 12 dBi. At about 30 dollars it does the job of a directional antenna pretty well. It certainly is not the most efficient at its job, but it is an old standby for me.

Despite costing about five dollars, these near field antennas are very useful for identifying the source of a signal. Because of the fact that they only detect a signal in a nearby area, these can be used to pinpoint the exact area something is broadcasting from after a general direction is ascertained through the use of a parabolic log antenna. These do require a male to male cable converter kit.

I am going to be investigating low cost TSCM techniques to write about here. The traditional stuff just won’t cut it for most people. A cheap non-linear junction detector from a shoddy shop in China will run you at least $10,000, and the stockpile of cheap superbrooms ran out 10 years ago. I will be playing with near field EMI antennas to possibly find some cheaper options.
